RICHMOND, Va. -- Under a clear Richmond sky our region's children opened the UCI Road World Championships Friday night carrying flags belonging to the 75 nations competing here over the next ten days.
Many of those kids told us how excited they are to see a fellow Henrico High School Center For the Arts alum Rayvon Owen performing in front of thousands under the stars on brown's island.
"This is a moment in history," one girl said.
Native Richmonders carrying American flags said the event highlights how far the city has come over the past several years.
"The Richmond experience is just it's amazing," one woman said.
And one man, originally from the Netherlands said it's great to see RVA looking a little more European.
"It really was a great moment to see the Dutch flag...to see all these nationalities come here and the excitement about cycling."
Officials say more than 12,000 people attended Friday night's UCI Road World Championships opening ceremony,
