UCI Road World Championships Opening Ceremony

UCI Road World Cycling Championships Opening Ceremony Friday, September 18th, 6:30-8pm on Brown’s Island featuring The Richmond Symphony in concert and Rayvon Owen performing the National Anthem, special guests, UCI President, a parade of nation flags  gates, and riders from the Richmond CyclingCorp will open at 5:30pm. Cycling-Themed Displays and Exhibits in the Richmond area:

  • The Valentine Museum – In Gear: Richmond Cycles, a take on the history of cycling in Richmond from the 19th century to present day.  The opening of the exhibition coincides with the UCI Road World Cycling Championships in September, look for special extended hours nightly during the cycling event. Extended hours from September 19-26, Monday – Saturday 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Sunday Noon-8 p.m. Sally Bell’s Kitchen will serve lunch in the Valentine Garden Monday-Friday, 11 am-2 pm.   • Science Museum of Virginia  – Bikes: Science on Two Wheels through September 27th.  Discover a collection of historic, rare, peculiar and all-around amazing bikes! Since its inception in the late 19th century, the bicycle has impacted how people live, work and play. Trace the evolution of the bicycle from its origins to the sleek, modern designs that line streets around the world.   • Virginia War Memorial – World War II Women’s Army Corps Bicycle, A bicycle specifically designed for members of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) during World War II is now on display at the Virginia War Memorial’s Paul and Phyllis Galanti Education Center in downtown Richmond. The bicycle is on loan from the U.S. Army Women’s Museum at Fort Lee, Virginia through September 31st to coincide with the upcoming Richmond 2015 UCI World Cycling Championship taking place September 19-27 in the Richmond area.   • The Branch Museum of Architecture and Design – Balance in Motion: The Evolution of Cycling in America through October 18th, 2501 Monument Avenue.   • Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden welcomes the UCI Road World Cycling Championships to Richmond, and celebrates with extended hours till 8 p.m. on weeknights September 21 – 25. UCI Road World Championships Sunday, September 20. The Garden is the start venue for the elite men’s and women’s team time trial events. Free admission to the Garden on this day (only). Evenings in the Garden during UCI Road World Championships in Richmond Monday, September 21 – Friday, September 25 (Weeknights Only). Extended hours till 8pm, Leashed pets allowed on the evening of Thursday, September 24, Regular Garden admission. Activities will be in the gardens adjacent to Bloemendaal House, a structure which was one of the first bicycling clubs in Richmond. An exhibit detailing the history of the property as the Lakeside Wheel Club and Richmond’s early cycling history is included in admission. Richmond 2015 at Kings Dominion, Wednesday, September 23rd, from 1 - 3:35pm, Men’s Elite Individual Time Trial will begin their “race of truth” 20 miles north of Richmond at Kings Dominion, in Hanover County. Racers will then speed past Meadow Event Park, home to the State Fair of Virginia and birthplace of thoroughbred racing legend Secretariat. Racers will head south on long, open straights past the Hanover County Courthouse, the third oldest courthouse still in use in the U.S. and dating back to about 1740. Long hills on Brook and Wilkinson roads bring the racers back into the city through Virginia Union University before turning into downtown. Nearly half the turns of the entire route fall within the closing kilometers, the second to last of which is onto the 300-meter-long climb up Governor Street. At the top, riders turn left and finally face a false flat 680 meters to the finish. Amelia County Fair continues through September 20th, fireworks Friday night 9pm, hosted by the Amelia County Fair Association, at the Amelia County Fairgrounds Joe H. Paulette Memorial Park, 16501 Five Forks Road, Amelia. Field Day Of The Past, September 18 - 20, gates open at 8am each day, hosted by the Rockville-Centerville Steam and Gas Historical Association . Field Day offers Historic displays, buildings, demonstrations and re-enactments, Tractor and Truck Pulls, Small Engine Displays "Living History" exhibits for antique machinery including a sawmill, broom handle making machine, Arts and Crafts Vendors and a Flea Market, Antique and Modern Construction Equipment, Heritage Craft Area, Sorghum Molasses making, Carnival Rides, Animal Exhibits and Equestrian Events. The Field Day of the Past show grounds are located at the intersection of Rout 623 (Ashland Road) and Route 622 in Goochland County, Off I-64, exit #172 (Rockville Manakin) south. Grounds are located 1/8 mile from the interstate. Follow the signs. Parking is  available in the lot located on Route 622 across from the main Pedestrian Gate.  Over flow parking will be available Saturday Only, on Route 250 Broad Street. Glen Allen Day at Meadow Farm Museum, Saturday, September 19, 9:30am-3pm. Free and open to All ages. Hosted by The Glen Allen Ruritan Club in association with Henrico Recreation and Parks, one of Henrico County’s largest outdoor festivals. A parade steps off Mountain Road at 9:30am, with activities in the park to include balloon animals by Miss Sheri the Clown, a petting zoo, airbrush designs, arts, crafts, business fair, and local musicians on two stages. The Color Run, Saturday, September 19th, 7:30am – 10am, at Richmond International Raceway. This event is also known as the Happiest 5k on the Planet, is a unique paint race that celebrates healthiness, happiness and individuality. Parking opens at 7:30 am and is complimentary in Lot D through Gate 4 (Laburnum Ave.) and 6 (Carolina Ave.) at Richmond International Raceway. Carpooling is highly encourage.
