HandsOn Day

RICHMOND, Va. — If you are looking to give back to your community, but do not know where to start, check out HandsOn Day. It is a day when more than 1,000 volunteers come together and work on service projects that make Richmond a better place to live. This year HandsOn Day is Saturday, October 17 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

“The thing I love about volunteering is that volunteers come in all ages, shapes, sizes, and backgrounds,” HandsOn Day Steering Committee Chair Claire Calise said. “I’ve seen even small volunteer groups that have volunteers ranging in age from 15 – 70. It’s pretty awesome to see individuals from all across the Greater Richmond region come together to give back in such a positive way.”

Volunteers for HandsOn Day 2015 can choose from more than 60 service projects taking place in and around Richmond. Click here to sign up and see which project works best for you, your family and your friends. Once you click through, find and click the blue volunteer button.

HandsOn Day is Saturday, October 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a celebration at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery.

HandsOn needs more than 1,200 volunteers to fill this year’s service projects. The service projects, which benefit local nonprofits, schools and parks range from helping to build a house to visiting seniors and walking dogs. Other projects include painting and gardening.

“HandsOn Day will also feature Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects and Drop-In projects, so volunteers who can’t attend one of the events or can’t commit all morning to a project can still participate,” HandsOn Day spokeswoman Liz Lungut said. “The goal of HandsOn Day is not only to make an incredible impact on the region during a short amount of time, but also to inspire people to become life-long volunteers and really see first-hand the difference they can make in our community by giving back.”

Following the projects, volunteers are invited to a HandsOn Day celebration at Hardywood Craft Brewery.

WTVR CBS 6 is a proud sponsor of HandsOn Day. In 2014, a group of CBS 6 employees, their friends, families and CBS 6 viewers worked to beautify Great Shiplock Park in Richmond.

HandsOn Greater Richmond is one of four programs under the Partnership for Nonprofit Excellence, which provides nonprofits in Central Virginia with the tools they need to improve their effectiveness and efficiency for greater impact.
