ESSEX COUNTY, Va. — A 17-year-old female driver has been charged with reckless driving after a deadly head-on crash in Essex County Sunday evening.

State police said the wreck happened on Route 659 (Desha Road) about a half mile west of Route 671 at 6:45 p.m.

“A 2006 Ford SUV was travelling east on Route 659 when it lost control in a curve and struck a west bound 2005 Nissan Sentra head-on,” Sgt. Steve Vick with Virginia State Police said.

The driver of the sedan, 65-year-old Carolyn L. Martin of Essex County, was transported to Riverside Tappahannock Hospital. Martin, who was not wearing a seat belt, died from her injuries.

The 17-year-old driving the SUV was not hurt and was wearing a seat belt.

Officials said speed is considered a factor in the crash.
