DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. — State police are investigating an accident that left a 23-year-old woman dead and a 56-year-old man hospitalized after the RV they were in traveling in ran off I-85 in Dinwiddie County and hit several trees Saturday evening.
Sgt. Steve Vick with Virginia State Police said the wreck happened around 5:40 p.m. at mile marker 45.
“The troopers investigation revealed that a 2005 Beaver Venture RV was traveling north on Interstate 85 in the right lane when the right front tire blew out causing the RV to run off the road taking out about 195 feet of guardrail then striking several trees ejecting the passenger,” Sgt. Steve Vick said in a news release.
Officials said the passenger, Jessica C. Romero, of Oviedo, Florida, was transported Southside Regional Hospital where she later died of her injuries.
The driver, John C. Alberts, of Riverview, Florida, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was also transported to Southside Regional Hospital. Troopers said he was wearing a seat belt.
Just before 10 p.m., the interstate’s left lane had reopened. The wreck closed all lanes of the interstate earlier in the evening.
Troopers are investigating the crash.
