RICHMOND, Va. – So, you want to see the 2015 Road World Championships but you don’t know whether to walk, bike or drive.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Most parking restrictions along the courses [see here for course and road closures] take effect the evening before training sessions and race events are lifted when streets reopen following the final race events on each course.

Long-term on-street parking restrictions are outlined in the Roads Guide Overview.

Is parking going to be a nightmare? Not necessarily, but there are ways to make it easier on yourself. The first rule — be prepared.

IF YOU WANT TO DRIVE IN AND USE THE SHUTTLE

Satellite parking and shuttle service
Spectators driving to the event are encouraged to utilize efficient satellite parking options. Because satellite lots are reserved exclusively for event parking, space in the lots will be consistently available.

Satellite parking is available for $10 a day, with free shuttles operating to and from satellite lots at regular intervals daily. Satellite parking must be reserved online at2015worlds.clickandpark.com.

Please note that NO CASH PAYMENT OPTION will be available at the lots.

Daily access to satellite lots will begin at 7 a.m. and will continue until 11 p.m. (move it or get towed).

Daily shuttle service to satellite lots will begin two hours prior to race events and will cease operation two hours after the podium ceremony. Not every lot will be active on every day.

Note that on Sunday, Sept. 20, Satellite Lot C: Anthem will be operational, with shuttle service to a location near the Team Time Trial start venue at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.

For all other dates, shuttles from all satellite lots will pick up and drop off spectators near the intersection of 2nd Street and Canal Street downtown, where an event information kiosk will be available.

IF YOU WANT TO DRIVE IN AND PARK YOURSELF

VENUE PARKING

  • Although utilizing satellite parking options is strongly encouraged, there will be many parking lots available during Worlds, in and around the venues, that will also serve as excellent parking options.
  • These decks are available on a first-come, first-served basis and will include many City of Richmond and VCU decks that will offer event parking on a first-come, first-served basis at the $10 per day event rate.
  • Parking availability will be limited in areas near race courses, event venues and concentrated street closures.
  • Cars left in event parking areas after 11:00 p.m. are subject to additional overnight charges.

Below is a map of parking decks previously put together for Folk Festival. Note, not all may be accessible. Double check with day by day road closures, HERE.

VIP PARKING

Those with access to reserved event parking will be notified of their parking location prior to the event.

IF YOU WANT TO USE MASS TRANSIT

Richmond’s GRTC provides bus service in and around the city.  GRTC bus schedules, routes and fares ARE HERE, including day by day break down of detours.

Detour routing and alternate bus stops will be available online using the Trip Planner tool. This tool will also be available on the GRTC Transit On The Go! mobile app beginning Sept. 19, 2015, when the Worlds races start.

GRTC said that staff and signage will assist riders daily, and when in doubt, go to the Downtown Transfer Plaza behind Richmond City Hall.

A special event bus pass will be for sale, that allows riders to connect as much as need, from anywhere, on any route. It will be good for unlimited rides anywhere GRTC goes during the Worlds. The cost is $35 and the pass is  valid Sept. 18 – 28.

IF YOU WANT TO BIKE

Streets recommended for bicycle travel are identified in the Richmond 2015 Pedestrian and Cyclist Guide.

Richmond 2015 will operate bicycle valet services free to the public at Festival Park adjacent to the Richmond Coliseum, the Libby Hill Park Fan Zone, and the Team Time Trial start venue at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens according to the schedule below.

If you believe your bicycle has been stolen, or if your bicycle was parked or locked illegally, and was impounded, contact the Richmond Police Department at 804-646-5100.
