ISKCON of Richmond Annual Janamashtami Festival, Saturday, September 5th, 7pm – midnight at Richmond Magnuson Grand Hotel Convention Center , 6531 West Broad Street. A free event. The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), otherwise known as the Hare Krishna movement, includes over six hundred major centers, temples and rural communities, nearly one hundred affiliated vegetarian restaurants, thousands local meeting groups, a wide variety of community projects, and millions of congregational members worldwide. Janamashtami commemorates the earthly appearance of Krishna, who is described in India’s sacred writings as God Himself. One of the biggest religious festivals in the world, celebrated by nine hundred and thirty million people around the world–and two million in the US alone. To devotees, it’s Christmas and New Year’s in one, a day of deep spiritual renewal and celebration that effectively finishes an old year and begins a fresh one. “History On Tap: The Queen Bee” a ticketed tasting event, A 213 Year Old Recipe Tasting at The Virginia Historical Society, Tuesday, September 8th, at 6pm. An informal discussion about mead-making in Virginia and the making of Queen Bee, featuring Bill Cavender, owner of Black Heath Meadery. Other speakers include, Keith Tignor, State Apiarist, will talk about beekeeping and honey and Dr. Paul Levengood, President and CEO of the VHS will speak about the importance of the VHS’s collections. The “NEW SHOES FOR BACK TO SCHOOL Ministry of The Richmond Partnership of Churches annual shoe give-away is Labor Day (Monday, September 7th) at Second Baptist Church Broad Rock, at 8am  for school age students, grades K-12. The Ministry began in 2005 at Third St. Bethel AME when 712 pairs were given to students, accompanied by their parents/guardians from the city of Richmond and its surrounding environs, it has grown to a total of over 72, 000 pairs of new shoes given – ten (10) years later.  A total of thirteen (13) churches are now in the ministry. RVA Community Improvement Blitz, Keep Virginia Beautiful is looking for volunteers to clean up the city in preparation for the UCI Road World Championships in September. Volunteers are needed Friday, September 11th from 11am – 3pm & Saturday, September 12, 9am – 1pm at various locations. Cycling Themed displays and exhibits in the Richmond area:

  • The Valentine Museum – In Gear: Richmond Cycles, a take on the history of cycling in Richmond from the 19th century to present day.  The opening of the exhibition coincides with the UCI Road World Cycling Championships in September, look for special extended hours nightly during the cycling event.   • Science Museum of Virginia  – Bikes: Science on Two Wheels through September 27th.  Discover a collection of historic, rare, peculiar and all-around amazing bikes! Since its inception in the late 19th century, the bicycle has impacted how people live, work and play. Trace the evolution of the bicycle from its origins to the sleek, modern designs that line streets around the world.   • Virginia War Memorial – World War II Women’s Army Corps Bicycle, A bicycle specifically designed for members of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) during World War II is now on display at the Virginia War Memorial’s Paul and Phyllis Galanti Education Center in downtown Richmond. The bicycle is on loan from the U.S. Army Women’s Museum at Fort Lee, Virginia through September 31st to coincide with the upcoming Richmond 2015 UCI World Cycling Championship taking place September 19-27 in the Richmond area.   • The Branch Museum of Architecture and Design – Balance in Motion: The Evolution of Cycling in America through October 18th, 2501 Monument Avenue.   • Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden welcomes the UCI Road World Cycling Championships to Richmond, and celebrates with extended hours till 8 p.m. on weeknights September 21 – 25. UCI Road World Championships Sunday, September 20. The Garden is the start venue for the elite men’s and women’s team time trial events. Free admission to the Garden on this day (only). Evenings in the Garden during UCI Road World Championships in Richmond Monday, September 21 – Friday, September 25 (Weeknights Only). Extended hours till 8pm, Leashed pets allowed on the evening of Thursday, September 24, Regular Garden admission. Activities will be in the gardens adjacent to Bloemendaal House, a structure which was one of the first bicycling clubs in Richmond. An exhibit detailing the history of the property as the Lakeside Wheel Club and Richmond’s early cycling history is included in admission. UCI Road World Cycling Championships Opening Ceremony Friday, September 18th, 6:30-8pm on Brown’s Island featuring The Richmond Symphony and Rayvon Owen performs a free concert, gates will open at 5:30pm.
