CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Neighbors said they've heard of at least four home break-ins in the Deer Run area of Chesterfield.

Police reports confirm at least a couple, including one in the Spring Trace community where the crook stole copper and left behind scattered syringes.

"I can’t see this being the American dream," said Christopher Kenny, who said Wednesday was supposed to be move-in day.  "I expected white picket fences to be great, unfortunately these people are everywhere. We even have them in the UK."

"Yesterday we came here because the landlord was getting the carpets cleaned, and found out that we couldn't get any water through the faucets because the copper piping was stolen - about 80 feet of it," said Kenny.

Someone had opened the crawl space door and helped themselves to the copper plumbing underneath the Little Horn Drive home. "It's crazy, I didn't think it was worth the effort and time to go into a crawl space and retrieve pipework," said Kenny.

Just a few blocks away on Whistler’s Cove Drive, more items were stolen. "It concerns me a great deal when you have valuables in the house," said Johnny Claybrook, who lives in the neighborhood.

And the people that live a few doors from Claybrook had their home broken into as well.  Jewelry and precious metals were swiped, according to the police report.

"I’ve lived here 20 years and haven't had this problem before," said Claybrook.

Some in the area said they've been noticing more petty crime, since some of the homes were foreclosed upon.

For Christopher Kenny, not having pipes wasn't the worst thing left behind. “There were different syringes and needle covers scattered throughout the house. It's not a nice sight," said Kenny.

Kenny said he and his family are staying with friends from the UK for the next few days, as his landlord has to install new pipework underneath the entire house.
