RICHMOND, Va. -- Erika weakened on Saturday, and is now just an area of disturbed weather. The system will travel near the west coast of Florida and in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. While over the warm water, it could strengthen back into a depression or tropical storm, but the chances are not extremely high.
During the next few days, what remains of Erika will move northward towards the Florida panhandle. It will have some gusty winds and create rough surf, but the greatest impact will be rainfall. Sections of Florida could see 2-5"+ of rainfall through early this week.
The remnants from Erika, combined with a stalled front and Atlantic moisture will produce heavy rain totals across eastern Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Much of this will stay south of our area, but some moderate rainfall will occur across extreme southeastern Virginia.
The additional moisture will help produce a few showers across the rest of Virginia, but amounts will be quite light in comparison.
