RICHMOND, Va. -- The shops and restaurants in Richmond's Fan District attract people from all over town. But this summer, the neighborhood has been marred by incidents of violent crime.

Earlier in August, police shot and killed a gunman who opened fire at officers. Weeks earlier, police investigated a shooting on the street.

Tuesday night, Richmond Police tried to change that negative attention, one door at a time. Police had a community walk-through and walked door-to-door in the Fan.

Officers said they were reaching out to address crime and build a relationship with the people who live in the Fan.

"Part of it is we've increased our visibility, but part of this walk is to interact with the citizens in this area and ask them what they see, what their issues are, what they feel their issues are, and what we could do to help them," Richmond Police Major Michael Shamus said.

Fan resident Stephon Randolph said he was pleasantly surprised with the community walk-through.

“I didn’t expect this; I just got home and saw them around the neighborhood,” said Randolph. “It’s nice to see them, I mean they drive up and down the neighborhood all the time, but it’s nice to see them out walking around.”

This event was the latest in a series of walks conducted on a monthly basis by Richmond Police in neighborhoods throughout the city.
