GILBERT, Ariz. — The mother who left her baby boy outside in a grocery cart on Monday in Arizona has now been charged with one misdemeanor count of child endangerment.

The Gilbert Police Department forwarded the charge against Cherish Peterson, who turns 28 this week, to the town prosecutor’s office, according to a department spokesman. It will be up to that office to decided how to proceed.

KPHO reportedPeterson’s baby son, who is not even a year old, was found strapped into a carrier that was in the back of shopping cart outside a Gilbert salon Monday afternoon.

The salon employees who found the baby waited with him for several minutes to see if his mom would come back. When she did not, they took him inside and called the police, thinking he might have been abandoned.

Police said Peterson had three children with her while shopping at the Fry’s shopping center at Higley and Pecos roads.

“I don’t know how you forget a baby in Arizona, in the heat,” Supercuts employee Miranda Asadoorian said. “It’s kind of hard to forget a child. And in this heat? That bothered me.”

Although he was checked out at a local area as a precaution, the baby was not overheated and was not injured.
