RICHMOND, Va. — Algae in the James River could be dangerous to your dog. Style Weekly first reported about the potentially deadly algae in the stagnant water caused by recent hot weather.
“You can’t just tell from the color of the water,” Charles Hickey, founder of Short Pump Animal Hospital, told Style. “There are 2,000 species of bacteria playing around in there, and 80 of those are very toxic.”
Veterinarians said symptoms appear within 30 minutes and include vomiting, drooling or tremors. No river bacteria-related dog deaths have been reported this year, Style noted.
