Traffic jammed along I-95 south Thursday night.

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. — Virginia State Police said the driver of motorcycle involved in a crash with a car along I-95 south in Colonial Heights Thursday night has died.

The accident, which happened near Swift Creek (mile marker 56) about a mile north of Temple Avenue around 8:05 p.m., closed the interstate’s center and right lanes. As of 9 p.m., traffic was backed up more than three miles. But by 10:15, only the right shoulder remained closed and traffic was only backed up for about a mile.

“A 2013 Hyundai Elantra was traveling south on I-95 when the driver was changing lanes and ran off the road right striking the guardrail and coming partially out into the roadway when it was struck by a 2005 Suzuki Katana motorcycle,” Sgt. Steve Vick with Virginia State Police said.

Officials said the victim, 25-year-old Katoria D. Spellman of Petersburg, was transported to VCU Medical Center where she died.

The driver of the sedan, 22-year-old Bennie M. Jenkins III of Petersburg, was charged with reckless driving. He was not wearing a seat belt, but was not hurt in the crash.

Vick said weather is being considered a factor in the crash.
