DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. -- A foul smell and discolored water has prompted Dinwiddie officials to issue a warning about Stony Creek. The county recommends staying out of the water until it can be determined what happened. In addition to not swimming, the county advised people refrain from fishing and canoeing.

"The County and state officials have been on-site and are actively investigating an unauthorized discharge into the waters of Stony Creek. Water in the affected area is currently being tested by state laboratories and results will be released as they are available," the county indicated. "Officials have ruled out any issue with local waste-water treatment facilities, as well as the application of bio-solids."

Test results from the state lab are expected by late next week.

Stony Creek flows into the Nottoway River. This is a developing story.
