CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Jonelle Mason said she is always making sure she locks her car doors no matter where she is.
"I always make sure that I have no valuables showing and I always take my purse with me, always," she said.
Mason said she's now especially cautious after learning about the recent car break ins at her gym.
Chesterfield Police said around 9 a.m. Tuesday someone broke into two cars in the parking lot of American Family Fitness on S. Chalkley Road. "I'm totally surprised and stunned because you wouldn't think that it would happen in this area, especially with the high traffic," said Mason, who has been going to the gym for years.
According to police, the thief smashed the windows to get into the car, then stole a purse out of one vehicle and an electronic device out of the other.
CBS 6 spoke with an employee of American Family Fitness. He wasn't there at the time of the break-ins, but said when things like this happen, they work with police and try to figure out if there's any surveillance they can provide.
And whether you're headed to the gym, or the grocery store, Mason said these crimes can teach a valuable lesson to anyone.
"Everybody needs to be vigilant and you need to take your time and grab your valuables and take them with you," she said.
