CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — The owner of a dog left inside a hot car Tuesday was issued a summons for animal cruelty after the pet had to be rescued from the vehicle, the Chesterfield Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook.

“Kudos to Sergeant Armstrong and Mr. Conte for assisting Lucas today after his owners left him in the car in the courts parking lot,” the posted read. “Even with the windows cracked it did not take long for the internal temperature in the car to reach 106 degrees.”

Lucas was eventually returned to his owner.
