HENRICO, Va. -- On the corner of Skipwith Drive and Forest Avenue in the West End, Henrico resident Maria Miller has noticed a traffic concern.
“The light that's currently red on the extreme right,” Miller said.
"Someone that's not familiar will assume that light indicates that there's a lane,” she said. “A corresponding lane to that light."
There isn't, but there's a soft shoulder that drivers use to make a right onto Forest Avenue.
"Soft shoulder is not a lane, you’re not supposed to drive in it. It's for accidents only."
"I can see because of the separation of the single heads maybe some could get confused but this intersection has not changed in the twenty years that I’m aware of,” said Michael Jennings, Public Works Assistant Director.
Jennings wants to set the record straight.
The double indicator lights are for safety.
"If the right went out for any reason, that bulb went out its double indicated there's another green, yellow and red bulb,” he said.
Jennings said they could consider making an adjustment with the placement of the indicators, but they won't consider Miller's option.
"Remove the light because it's confusing,” Miller said.
"We can look into that to see if it's spaced too far that maybe it is confusing, but normally that's our standard,” Jennings said, "but we could look at that. "Also the rule of the road is you’re not supposed to cross the solid line."
He said it is a national requirement for through lanes to be double indicated with traffic lights.
