ALBANY, NY — Nurses and their patients can form special bonds, but this sweet example takes the wedding cake.
A 4-year-old leukemia patient in Albany, New York loves one of her nurses so much that she knew she wanted to marry him.
So, the staff at the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancers at the Albany Medical Center got together and made that ‘wedding’ happen Thursday.
Following a bridal procession complete with bridesmaids, flowers, and even a hospital mask veil, little Abby gave a tiny curtsey as she asked nurse Matt Hickling to marry her.
Following a bridal procession complete with bridesmaids, flowers, and even a hospital mask veil, little Abby gave a tiny curtsey as she asked nurse Matt Hickling to marry her.
“Of course, I will marry you! Will you take me to be your husband?” Matt said.
As you can see in the video above, Abby’s hug was an emphatic “Yes.”
Nurse Lori Ciafardoni posted the video to WNYT’s Facebook page, saying that the staff and generous donors from a local flower shop planned the wedding in less than 24 hours.
“THIS is why we go into nursing,” said Ciafardoni.
When asked if she was happy to be married, Abby replied, “Yeah, this is my first time to be married!”
Abby’s mother did let Matt know about what might happen.
“I sent him a text message just to give him a heads up that this was an idea that was in her head, just so he was not in shock,” Renee Sayles said.
Sayles was thrilled that the hospital helped out and
It means the world. They seriously make everything so much easier for us to deal with in this process.”
Abby’s mom said her daughter had a few setbacks in her recovery, but her long-term prognosis is good.
