RICHMOND, Va. -- Police are investigating a homicide that occurred around 4:50 p.m. Tuesday. Police responded to a call for shots fired in the 1700 block of Southlawn Avenue.

Police found the body of Benjamin Alston, 29, of the 2400 block of Harwood Street, lying on the sidewalk outside one of the apartment buildings. He had been shot.

Detectives canvassed the neighborhood and later said they are making good progress in their investigation due to several tips provided by residents of Hillside Court. They believe the shooting occurred as the result of an altercation.

A witness said that a book mobile was handing out books to kids when the shooting occurred.
