RICHMOND, Va -- Dominion Virginia Power have warned customers about scam phone calls in the area.

According to Dominion, there have been a number of complaints in recent weeks of customers being called by someone claiming to be a representative of the company. Dominion told CBS 6 this is a recurring scam that tend to pop up more during the summer months.

“They are very savvy, they know how to talk to customers. They know how to sound official, they know how to sound like they are from Dominion Virginia Power, but they’re not." Daisy Pridgen, a spokeswoman with the Dominion said.

The caller is told they owe money for unpaid bills and they need to send a money order in order to avoid their power being turned off.

Pridgen warns, if you ever have any doubt who you are actually talking to, hang up, and call Dominion yourself to verify.

Dominion said, it will never ask you to pay with anything other than a check or by going to their website and paying with a credit card. The company also told CBS 6 you should call police and notify them if you get one of these calls.
