RICHMOND, Va — Moving up the corporate ladder can be tough, but a new survey finds it’s not just about performance — there are other things bosses are looking at when considering who to promote.

Career Builder surveyed more than two thousand hiring managers, asking for characteristics that could prevent an employee from being promoted.

When it comes to appearance, provocative attire and wrinkled or unkempt clothes were the issues employers had the biggest problems with. Other answers included extra piercings, an excessively-casual style of dress, and unprofessional haircuts or facial hair.

Certain behaviors were also red flags. The biggest offenders included having a bad attitude and regularly showing up to work late. Other behaviors included cursing, gossiping, checking social media accounts on company time, and regularly starting non-work-related conversations with co-workers.

There were some other unusual answers. Twenty one percent of hiring managers said too much perfume or cologne was a problem, and 23 percent said bad breath was a problem. Nineteen percent also mentioned taking smoke breaks, while 36 percent mentioned failing to clean up after oneself.
