KENBRIDGE, Va. -- A family in Lunenburg County is reeling after discovering a beloved pet intentionally decapitated in their own front yard.

Tina Jones, who rescued the cat named "Tiger" just weeks ago, said her children made the disturbing discovery Monday.

Since then she has been haunted by what she saw. The little cat's head simply lying face up in the ditch.

"Every night since then I can't sleep," said Jones, who fears that something else "bad is going to happen."

Jones said animal control officers told her the act appeared deliberate.

"He took the head and my story. He had a vet examine it and they said it was intentionally done," Jones said.

Jones said she believes whoever is responsible for the shocking crime wanted her family to know what they had done.

Officials with the Kenbridge Police Department said they believe they have culprits. However, it remains unclear if charges will be filed.

"To see kids -- if it is juveniles -- doing things at this level it's very disheartening," Police Chief Raymond Hite said.

Hite said officers plan on going to the county's juvenile intake officer perhaps next week to seek formal charges.

"She will have the final determination," Hite said.

Jones, who said the teen in question has a history with her family, was told the boy has already left the state.

A Facebook group has been set up to support the Jones family as they continue to come to grips with the tragedy.
