ARCHDALE, North Carolina — Supporters of the North Carolina girl who lost her arm in a shark attack while swimming off Oak Island last week have set-up a Facebook page so others could keep track of Kierston Yow’s progress. Thousands of people are now offering their love, support and prayers for the 12-year-old shark attack victim on the The “Kierston Yow Support” Facebook page.
Yow lost a portion of her left arm, below the elbow, and suffered injuries to her left leg when the shark bit her in waist-deep water. On Sunday, she celebrated Father’s Day at N.C. Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill.
A GoFundMe page established to help Yow’s family cover her medical costs has raised close to $12,000.
Yow was one of two children injured in the June 14 shark attack.
Hunter Treschl, of Colorado, also lost an arm to the shark.
“I’ve lost my arm obviously, so I have kind of two options,” the 16-year-old survivor said. “I can try to live my life the way I was and make an effort to do that even though I don’t have an arm or I can kind of just let this be completely debilitating and bring my life down and ruin it.”
Hunter said he chooses to “fight and live a normal life” despite losing his arm.
