HANOVER COUNTY, Va. -- Hanover County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark "Alex" Moore was killed in an off-duty motor vehicle crash Sunday morning in Middlesex County, Hanover Sheriff Col. David Hines confirmed. Moore, 24, of Mechanicsville, was the passenger in a car that ran off the road and crashed into trees.

Moore, who graduated from Hanover High School in 2009 and James Madison University in 2013, began his career with the Hanover Sheriff’s Office on January 1, 2015. He was scheduled to graduate from the Hanover County Sheriff’s Academy on June 19, Col. Hines said.

Family will receive friends on Thursday June 11, 2015 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Road.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday June 12, 2015, at Cool Spring Baptist Church located at 9283 Atlee Station Road in Mechanicsville.

"Please keep Alex’s family, friends, and academy classmates in your prayers," Col. Hines said.

The Moore family released the following statement on the death of Alex.

Our family is stunned and deeply saddened by the loss of our son and brother, Alex Moore.  We are comforted in knowing that he is in Heaven and that we will see him again.  Alex was an extraordinary young man – mature beyond his 24 years.  In 2007, at age 15, he saved his father’s life by performing CPR until first responders arrived at our house following a heart attack.

Pursuing his calling for a career in law enforcement, Alex joined the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office in January of this year.  He was due to complete the Sheriff’s Academy in two weeks.  He was beaming with pride at the thought and we were so proud of him.

Alex was a friend to many and loved in return by a great group of kids.  His fondest memories are of those spent with his friends and family.  Those memories are what we cherish now.

Our sincere thanks go out to our friends in the community, to Alex’s friends, to the Hanover Sheriff’s Office and to Cool Spring Baptist Church for all of the care, loving and assistance that is being bestowed on us in this time of need.  Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers.  Please also remember to pray for his friend who was injured in the accident.

Virginia State Police are investigating whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash, but said both Moore and the driver appeared to be wearing seat belts. No charges have been filed as the investigation is ongoing and pending review by the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
