RICHMOND, Va. — Ride service Uber is offering free rides to and from South Richmond this weekend. Similar to a taxi cab, Uber picks up and drops off customers all over town. Unlike most cabs, Uber utilizes an app and a team of part-time drivers to offer speedy service.

“Uber is a safe and convenient way to travel around the city. With just a few taps to your smartphone, you’re able to request a ride that arrives in a matter of minutes, and will take you wherever you need to go,” Uber spokeswoman Kaitlin Durkosh said. “The whole experience is cashless and seamless. Once you’ve requested a ride, you’re able to see your driver’s name, photo, vehicle make and model, and license plate number in the app. You can also track your driver on the app’s map, so you know exactly where your driver is, and the ETA for pick-up.”

Durkosh said Uber was offering the free rides to allow riders an opportunity to explore an area of the city that they may not know a lot about. The coverage area for the free ride is represented in blue on the map below.

The offer includes two free rides (up to $20 each) between Friday, June 5 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, June 7 at 11:59 p.m.

In Richmond, Uber usually charges a base fare of $1.25 plus $0.20 per minute and $1.35 per mile, Durkosh said. You can get a fare estimate in the Uber app or website.

“Enter a pick-up or drop-off address south of the James River and your ride will automatically be free—no promo code necessary,” the Uber spokesperson said.
