NEW YORK — “Serial” fans won’t have to wait much longer for a fresh case.Producers for the popular podcast have announced there will be two new seasons, beginning this fall.

“We are hard at work reporting not one, but two distinct new stories,” the producers said in a newsletter that was reported by several news outlets.

“This means we’re planning on a third season of Serial. And we hope it means we can reduce the amount of time between the end of Season Two and the beginning of Season Three.”

The plan, they said, is to release the second season in the fall and the third season in the spring.

Producers of the podcast would not describe the cases being prepared.

“Sorry – we can’t tell you details about the new stories yet. What we can say is that they’re very different from Season One, but no less interesting to us,” the producers said.

The podcast is a production of This American Life and WBEZ.

It won’t be easy to top the first season, which debuted in October 2014. Those 12-episodes followed “Serial” co-creators Sarah Koening and Julie Snyder as they examined the case of Adnan Syed, who was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend more than a decade ago.

The show emerged as a cultural sensation, quickly becoming the most popular podcast on iTunes. Last month, it won a Peabody Award.

Syed, meanwhile, has used the exposure to overturn his conviction. His bid for a new trial was bolstered earlier this month when the Maryland Court of Special Appeals agreed to send the case back to a lower court.
