NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- A Newport News police officer is getting online praise after someone recorded him taking time out of his day to interact with children in the community. The video, posted on the Newport News Police Facebook page has been viewed nearly a quarter-million times.

The video showed Officer Zack Lyons chatting with children and showing them his police cruiser.

"It’s pretty crazy," Officer Lyons told WTKR. "But I think it’s cool. I think it’s what we need right now. Police sort of have a bad rap, but we are all good people. There may be a small percentage that is not good cops, but it’s up to the other officers that see that to look at them and do something about it."

The video has generated hundreds of comments, most of which praise the officer.

"I have always been in awe of the brave individuals who would put themselves between me and a bullet. I never fail to say 'thank you' to any officer I meet," Myrna Taylor wrote. "I firmly believe that the vast majority of you are 'guardian angels walking among us.'THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. I pray God's blessings for all police officers every day."
