RICHMOND, Va. -- Police are asking for the public's help identify a "person of interest" in last week's deadly shooting outside a Southside Family Dollar store.

Richmond police said officers were called to the 6500 block of Midlothian Turnpike for a report of a shooting around 3 p.m. last Thursday.

When officers arrived, they found 24-year-old Sylvester Nichols,  of the 6300 block of Glenway Drive, lying in the parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound. Nichols was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The "person of interest," who was captured on surveillance cameras, is described as a black male, about 5 feet 8 inches tall  and wearing a red t-shirt and red shorts.

CBS 6 reporter Jon Burkett said that a business owner reported hearing at least three gunshots and saw a man wearing a red shirt running from the scene.

"He called himself hustling and started hanging with the wrong people,” said Nichols’ father, Sylvester Nichols III in an interview last week.  He told CBS-6 he had lost his son to the streets.

"Keep your kids close,” Nichols said last week.  “Tell them you love them every day."
