ASHLAND, Va. -- A group of runners hit the road at the stroke of midnight in memory of a Hanover mother hit and killed by a drunk driver.

Dozens of people turned out at Randolph-Macon College for the second annual Midnight Macon Mile in honor of Meg Menzies.

A drunk driver hit and killed the mother as she jogged along a Hanover road in January of 2014.

Meg's husband, Scott, attended the late-night event and spoke about the heartbreaking loss of the tragedy.

Keith Cartwright, the Alcohol and Drug Education Coordinator with Randolph-Macon College, also ran in the event.

Cartwright said today young people tend to think incidents such as drunk driving only "happen to other people," but warned that poor decisions like driving while intoxicated can affect more people than you think.

"When we have real life people like Scott Menzies stand here and talk about the pain they've endured as a result of a drunk driver then it shows it can happen to ordinary people," Cartwright said.

Dr. Michael Carlson, the driver who pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter charges in Menzies' death, was recently sentenced to four years in prison.

He appealed to the court to enter a rehab program that would have allowed him to knock time off his sentenced.

A judge denied the motion and Dr. Carlson will have to serve his full sentence.
