HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — Traffic was backed up for miles Monday afternoon because of an accident involving a semi on I-95 north not far from I-295.

VDOT said that the interstate’s right and center lanes were closed just south of I-295 (mile marker 84). As of 4:30 p.m., there was a 5.5 mile backup.

Virginia State Police said that a semi traveling northbound around 1:30 p.m. was not able to stop in time in time when traffic had slowed. As a result, the truck stopped short in order to avoid an accident.

That sudden stop caused the truck’s load to shift and a container filled with 250 gallons of paint fell and spilled across center and right lanes of the interstate.

State police said that the lanes are closed while crews cleanup the paint.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was charged for following too closely and with failing to properly secure its load.
