FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Police have a shelter in place at a motel, and a street closed off, as negotiators work to reach a male barricaded in his room.

The male  is barricaded in a room at the Relax Inn, in the 1900 block of Princess Anne St.  Police arrived at approximately 5 p.m. to take subject into custody on a magistrate-issued Emergency Custody Order.  This is an order to hold him for an evaluation from a mental health professional.

Police said the male refused to come out of his room and refused entry to police.  The negotiation process is underway with tactical and crisis negotiation teams.

It is unknown if the subject is armed but there are no hostages.

The male is known to police and is a local man.  He currently has no fixed address.

The 1900 block of Princess Anne St is closed down and traffic is being diverted.  No evacuations have been ordered; other residents of the motel are sheltering in place.  A police command post has been set up across the street.
