NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. — A 15-year-old inmate who escaped from a regional juvenile detention transport van, parked at the Pilot gas station off Emmaus Church Road in New Kent, was taken back into custody after he was spotted running along Interstate 64 east.

“The 15-year-old male inmate was restrained with the use of handcuffs and leg restraints. He escaped through a rear passenger window of the van,” a spokesperson for the New Kent County Sheriff’s Office said of Tuesday afternoon’s incident. “Units arrived on the scene within minutes of the call and a perimeter was established.”

The teen was taken back into custody about 40 minutes after the escape after someone spotted him running on the interstate near the 211 exit in New Kent. Additional charges against the teen are pending at this time.
