FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Police officers trying to track down a killer Friday morning found the murder suspect in the closet. A tip led Fredericksburg police to a Fall Hill apartment. As police entered the apartment to look for the suspect, they found him on the phone, in the closet, Fredericksburg Detective Wayne Hunnicutt said. Chance Robby Sumter, 22, was questioned and later arrested and charged with first-degree homicide in the death of 22-year-old Joshua Wormley.

Wormley, of Bowling Green,  was found stabbed in the chest at about 2:20 a.m. Friday in a stairwell at the Fall Hill Apartments.

“Emergency life-saving measures were taken on the scene and the victim was transported by ambulance to Mary Washington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later,” Fredericksburg Police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe wrote in an email.

Detective Wayne Hunnicutt said the preliminary investigation indicated Sumter and Wormley got into an argument over a woman. Sumter is being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond. Anyone with information about Wormley’s death was asked to call Detective Hunnicutt at 540-654-5753.

Wormley’s death was the first homicide in Fredericksburg since November 2013.
