RICHMOND, Va. – Prior to mid-February, Richmond was stuck in the midst of a “snow drought,” with a measly 0.3 inches of snow for the season-to-date, which fell in January. But February 16 broke the drought, and after two snowstorms, our official Richmond snowfall for the season is now up to 12.5 inches. That already surpasses the average snow for an entire snow season (the 30-year average seasonal snowfall for RIC is 10.3 inches based on 1981-2010 climatology).

What is even better for snow-lovers, this February snowfall (12.2 inches) slides us into the top ten snowiest on record.  February 2015 was the 9th snowiest February on record, edging out 1996 and kicking 1952 out of the list.

February 2015 also was the sixth coldest on record.  The daily high temperature averaged out to 41.9° and the daily low temperature averaged out to 20.9°.  When you average out all of the highs and lows for the entire month, you end up with 31.4°, which is 9.5° below normal.  This was also the coldest February since 1979.
