2.5 magnitude earthquake rattles Goochland during snow event

GOOCHLAND, Va. — A 2.5 magnitude earthquake rattled Goochland in the early hours of the morning, Thursday.

The earthquake struck at 8:48:28 UTC, which is 3 a.m., according to USGS.  The coordinates given put the event in the 2400 block of Log Cabin Road, in Maidens, just off Maidens Road. The spot is 27 miles from CBS 6.

This event has not been proven to be associated with the larger, 5.8 magnitude earthquake which created moderate tremors and numerous aftershocks along the East Coast. That August 23, 2011 earthquake occurred at the epicenter in the Central Virginia Seismic Zone near Louisa and Mineral, according to USGS.

The event happened during a snowfall that brought about five inches to Goochland.
