COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. – Interstates and primary routes have been cleared and treated, and now secondary roads will get some attention, said the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The agency said that  snow removal contractors have cleared most of the snow and ice off of the main routes numbered 1-599. Focus is now shifting to secondary routes (numbered 600 and above) where crews will plow roads with accumulations over an inch and treat any icy patches with salt and sand as needed.

VDOT expects to plow and treat most secondary routes overnight.

While most efforts will be focused on secondary routes, VDOT will continue to monitor and treat icy patches on interstates and primary routes if refreeze occurs. Temperatures are expected to dip in the twenties and teens overnight, so any moisture on the pavement may ice over. Drivers should use extreme caution on hills, shaded areas, bridges, ramps and overpasses until the roads are completely clear.

Drivers are encouraged to check www.511virginia.org for the latest traffic and road conditions before leaving. Individual road conditions can be found by visiting http://www.511virginia.org/mobile/?menu_id=conditions.
