CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe and Virginia Transportation Secretary Aubrey Layne stopped by the  Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) area headquarters in Chesterfield Tuesday morning. The men thanked VDOT crew members who have worked around the clock to clear snow off Virginia roads.

“With the main weather threat leaving the Richmond district, crews continue to tackle interstates and primary routes in 12-hour shifts in clear weather conditions,” VDOT posted on Facebook. “Crews continue to apply salt and sand to the pavement; salt to melt the snow for easier plowing, and sand to provide drivers with extra traction.”

VDOT said interstates and primary routes were listed in minor to moderate conditions. That means icy patches could cover small to medium areas of the pavement.

“Once crews have been able to clear the main routes, they will shift their efforts to secondary and neighborhood roads, which are still in moderate to severe condition, meaning that snow or ice could cover major portions of the roadway,” VDOT advised.
