The search for a state song continues, and the song”Sweet Virginia Breeze” has become an official contender.

Senator Walter Stosch (R – District 12) introduced a bill in support of the song, written by Steve Bassett and Robbin Thompson.

Both are local song writers who have performed around the country with artists like Bruce Springsteen.

The song was recorded in the River City and the video reflects that.

It’s a monumental task and perhaps that explains the indecision, and one that lawmakers have shirked for 17-plus years.

Right now the other prime contenders are Susan Greenbaum’s original song “Virginia, the Home of My Heart,” the Carter family’s “Longing For Old Virginia,” and a re-write of the song “Shenandoah” (a much-favored tune of a prominent lawmaker).

“Shenandoah” was originally about Missouri, but is it true that a Northerner re-shaped the lyrics?

And so we have the gavel already dropped on the 2015 General Assembly session, with no song sung.
