Crash in Amelia leaves 50,000 lbs. of corn meal on Rt. 360

AMELIA COUNTY, Va. – At approximately 4:47 p.m. Tuesday, a tractor trailer stuck a passenger vehicle after the driver of the tractor trailer failed to stop at a stop light.

According to Sgt. Stephan M. Vick of the Virginia State Police, after hitting the median, the tractor trailer overturned on its side and its contents, 50,000 lbs. of corn meal, spilled out onto the east bound lanes of Rt. 360 in Amelia County.

A 2006 Volkswagen was going south on Goodes Bridge Road coming onto Route 360, when the westbound 2004 Peterbilt tractor-trailer failed to stop.

The driver of the Volkswagen, Benjamin Thompkins, 65, of Amelia and a juvenile passenger were transported to Chippenham Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Jason Montes, 23, of Iowa, was not injured in the crash. A passenger in the tractor-trailer was transported to Chippenham Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Montes was charged with failure to obey a traffic signal.
