HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — A fatal accident on Interstate 295, about a half mile south of the Interstate 95 interchange in Henrico, is under investigation by police — though they believe winter weather was a factor.
At 10:11 a.m., a motorist traveling along I-295 spotted a vehicle in the woods off the right side of the interstate and called state police.
A 2004 Ford Ranger traveling south ran off the road to the right, overturned on the driver’s side and struck a tree, said Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Vick.
The driver of the Ford, Charles T. Vangoor, Jr., 68, of Ashland, died at the scene. He was wearing a seatbelt.
The vehicle was spotted around 10 a.m. Wednesday, but further investigation revealed the crash occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m., but the vehicle was obscured in the trees and was not noticed until later.
A photo taken near the crash scene showed traffic on Interstate 95 backed up near Virginia Center Commons shopping center, as police investigated.
This is a developing story.
