RICHMOND, Va. -- In the midst of conversations about tension between police and those they serve, one group in Richmond is working to build trust between the community and authority figures.

The Omega Psi Phi fraternity is reaching out to young men. The Upsilon Nu chapter says they believe a panel event at the Richmond Police Department Training Academy on Saturday, will pay off in the future.

Young men, ages 12 to 21, were invited to be a part of a panel discussion about appropriate ways to interact with those in law enforcement roles. Panel members included police, attorneys, pastors, military leaders and educators. Many of which are also members of the fraternity.

"By bringing in experts to share their time, to be unselfish with their time hopefully we're able to plant seeds in these young people to cause a better tomorrow," said event organizer Gregory Parham.

Organizers say they hope the take-away from the "Shaping Our Future" event is that everyone thinks about their roles in society. And compliance.
