RICHMOND, Va. – As expected, temperatures plunged into the single digits and teens across central Virginia this Thursday morning. With dry air, clear skies and an Arctic air-mass entrenched in our region, we had (nearly) ideal conditions for overnight cooling. We could have potentially dropped even lower if we didn’t still have a bit of a breeze overnight, and if we had snow-cover. Nevertheless, I think we did just fine with the cooling…
These are the preliminary low temperatures reported from this morning (i.e., meaning they haven’t been quality verified by the official record-keepers at NOAA). The last time we had lows like this across central Virginia was late January 2014, when we had several mornings in the teens and single digits (January 28-31, 2014).
What is notable about today (Thursday) is that we will not get out of the mid to upper 20s for afternoon high temperatures. This will mean the stretch of sub-freezing temperatures that began at 3PM Wednesday will continue all of Thursday, and not rise back above the freezing mark until late Friday morning (likely by 9-10AM Friday).
We are tracking another punch of this Arctic air-mass on schedule to arrive Friday evening, which will lead to another sub-freezing day on Saturday.
