Pres. Obama wants free community college for ‘everybody willing to work for it’

Free education “for those willing to work for it.”

That’s what President Obama said he would like to see in an announcement the White House posted to Facebook and Vine on Thursday.

He’s proposing to make the first two years of community college free.

“Everyone understands that education is the key to success for our kids in the 21st century, but what we also understand is that it’s not just for kids. We also have to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to constantly train themselves for better jobs, better wages and better benefits,” the president said.

But it would require both the federal government and the states to split the tab. States would have the option to participate.

It would also require legislation, which could be tough now that Republicans control both the House and Senate.

If every state participated, the proposal could help 9 million students and save those enrolled full-time an average of $3,800 a year, according to the White House.

The program will be modeled after one in Tennessee, in which the state covers the cost of community college tuition for students that’s not already covered for them by grants and scholarships. It also requires the student to have a mentor, perform 8 hours of community service per term, as well as maintain a 2.0 GPA.

The president made the announcement from Air Force One as he continues a three-state tour that’s previewing some highlights of his State of the Union Address.

More details about the president’s education proposal will be announced on Friday when he visits Pellissippi State Community College in Knoxville.

When the President says “free”, he means us in the middle class will not only fund big corporation bailouts, a bloated federal government, illegal aliens relocation to communities across the U.S., Obamacare, and now “free” community college for all. All this “free” stuff is killing the middle class. Time for the fat cats on wall street and welfare lingerers to start kicking in their portion.

It is free for Obama. He is not paying for it, taxpayers are. He gets the credit for giving it away and gets the votes. Win for win for Obama. Loss for the taxpayer.

2.0 GPA is way too low of a standard. 2.5 at a minimum. Skating by with a 2.0 means you aren’t working for that degree and 8 hrs of community service is not enough. 8hrs a week or 8hrs semester? This is a discouragement to companies and individuals that set up endowments for scholarships and grants. If this plan goes through I would be shocked if grants and scholarships for community colleges did not fall. This is yet another tactic to “buy” the youth vote and to create a legacy. Georgia has a similar plan that pays for in-state tuition as long as you maintain a 3.0. I like it because it has a relatively low standard for a GPA yet is still a challenge and because it is run by the state. Obama needs to worry about his legacy on Obamacare more than he needs a new pet project.

Some things sound great until the inevitable happens. In this case given a few years you will need an associates degree to get a job that now requires a high school degree.

this guys plan is to give away as much of the working middle class money from both hard working whites and blacks as possible. This plan is to allow all his new mexican voters to attend college on our dime. Most of his black voters already do or pay very little so just another give away to fatten his base.Alls the dems need is a mexican to run for president and all dems can say yes we voted for a mexican just like we voted for a color last go around

More free stuff for the illegals. , welfare leeches and of course the tax payers, the working stiffs pay the bill. Nothing like pandering the vote again. No chance of this passing since he did not even offer any hint of how this will be paid for. With the economic collapse occurring, state budgets in dire straights right now due to the collapse and oil related jobs being shed starting this week by the thousands in oil this is already doa

You could SEE that set up coming coming for a long time now..
He’s got to get everything lined up for FREE for “My Favorites, My Entitled Folks, and My Favorite Foreign Invaders”.

So, now Barry Soetoro wants no nationalize the community college system as well. Does this mean new lower standards and higher operating costs? The idea seems good on the surface (first implemented and paid for by a republican Tennessee governor) but Barry will screw this up like everything else he touches. Democrats are all the same.

We need less people in college and more in trades.
We should be putting some cash into developing an Apprentice program so folks come out
know how to use tools, fix things, etc.
College has become a business and whether or not some students belong in college or not is
not considered. Main thing is get in and give us 50K.
