Soldier barricaded inside Fort Eustis home on Thanksgiving surrenders

FORT EUSTIS, Va. -- – Officials say a soldier who barricaded himself in his home on Fort Eustis on Thanksgiving surrendered peacefully around midnight, according to a base spokesman.

Officials said the active duty Army soldier is assigned to Fort Eustis in Newport News .

WTKR reportsthat the incident started at around 8:15 pm. when the the man locked himself inside his home.

When his wife was unable to get inside the home, she called base MPs, according to a base spokesman.

The MPs who responded found the man barricaded inside. It is not known if he is armed.

Newport News police said they were informed of the incident by base officials and were told they were not needed.

Officials said the soldier will now face a physical and mental evaluation.
