ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. — Virginia State Police and federal investigators are investigating what caused a fatal plane crash Sunday morning in Rockingham County.
The plane went down around 7 a.m. in a remote are over a mountain in the George Washington National Forest, according to WHSV.
State police officials said a pilot and student pilot were in the Cessna single-engine fixed wing aircraft when it went down.
WHSV reports that the student pilot, 51-year-old John Hicks of Maryland, was concious when rescuers arrived at the crash scene. He was airlifted to the hospital with an ankle injury.
The instructor was killed in the crash.
“The occupant’s identification will be released once next of kin have been notified,” Virginia State Police Sergeant F. L. Tyler said in a news release.
State police and the FAA and NTSB are still investigating what caused the crash.
