SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- It took several hours and a team of more than a dozen people to rescue two kittens from a storm sewer in South Bend on Tuesday.

WSBT reportsthat Jenny Railing said her husband aroused her at 3 a.m. after he heard a cat mewling outside.

"He woke me and said, 'There's a cat in the storm drain,'" Railing said. "And I called the non-emergency police and they called animal control."

Animal Care and Control arrived first. And then department, after department, after department showed up.

"There are multiple agencies here today that showed up: Streets department, water, safety and risk," Animal Care and Control Director Matt Harmon said.

Code Enforcement and Bureau of Sewers and Waste Water were also on the scene.

Animal Care and Control's assistant manager pulled out the first kitten from the storm drain.

But the second one, stuck in a separate sewer, was a little trickier. It took crews about an hour, but the second kitten was eventually rescued.

Neighbors cheered when Reed emerged with the cat.

Stormy and Jared are now being cared for at animal care and control. Depending on their health, they could be up for adoption sometime in the next few weeks.
