DRAPER, Utah – Authorities in Utah are investigating after a bus driver transporting about 75 elementary students and adults was arrested for driving under the influence Monday morning, according to Fox13Now.com. Officials confirmed adults on the bus and other drivers called 911 to report the bus was swerving in and out of traffic and driving erratically.
Authorities stopped the bus 39-year-old Lycia Martinez was driving on I-15 south in Draper, Utah. The bus was on the way to BYU for a student council conference for students in the fifth and sixth grades.
Martinez took a field sobriety test and officials arrested her at that time. She has since been booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.
Another bus driver picked up the students and continued on the trip to BYU.
Authorities said Martinez has a prescription for an undisclosed medication however, they said she should not have taken it before getting behind the wheel.
She has been with the district for about six years.
Martinez has been placed on routine paid administrative leave.
