CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — James River High School chemistry teacher Tara Brunyansky got quite the surprise at a Wednesday morning school assembly.

She thought students and staff had gathered for a SOL celebration. Which they had. But then the surprise.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, state Superintendent of Public Instruction Steven Staples and Chesterfield Superintendent Marcus Newsome appeared to let her know she had been named the top educator in Central Virginia. Brunyansky is in the running to be statewide Teacher of the Year.

Brunyansky, who started in the classroom in 1996, taught at Thomas Dale High School prior to moving to James River High School in 2006.
