RICHMOND, Va. - People across America could be heard singing the national anthem Sunday in celebration of the song's 200th anniversary.
People gathered at the Virginia War Memorial to celebrate the history of "The Star Spangled Banner."
The nation's anthem was penned by Francis Scott Key, who witnessed the British attack Baltimore by bombarding Fort McHenry on the night of September 13, 1814.
The next morning, it is said that when Key saw the U.S. flag still flying over Fort McHenry, he wrote the poem that would become known as "The Star-Spangled Banner."
It was originally entitled "Defense of Fort M'Henry," according to the bicentennial commission. It was first set to the music of the British drinking song, "To Anacreon in Heaven."
