Bikes, bells and prayer mark Patriot Day ceremonies honoring 9/11 victims

RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones led a "Day of Service and Remembrance" at Marshall Plaza in downtown Richmond. The event was held to remember victims of the 9/11 attacks. The attacks happened 13 years ago Thursday. The event included a ringing of bells, color guard and moment of silence.

One of the youngest first responders at the Pentagon, Evandra Thompson, delivered the keynote address.

North of town, in Ashland, hundreds of motorcycle riders gathered. They joined thousands of other Virginians and riders from other states in the "2 Million Bikers to D.C.” ride. The ride also honors  victims of the 9/11 attacks.

The first Virginia Patriot Day ceremony was held at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond on Belvidere Street.

Retired Admiral John Harvey, Jr., the state's Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs, was the guest speaker.

The Navy recruiting district of Richmond conducted a flag ceremony.
